It's been 12 months now since I worked last and 10 months since I last received any benefits from the government, In Australia you only get the dole for 2 months then you are on your own.

Have had no luck in the last 6 months obtaining any more discs, which is a pity, I thought I was just getting good....

Ive had loads of people promise discs but it always falls though or they just "forget".

And Ive had a few thousand "tell me how you restore disc" emails That I don't reply too.
It took me years to do this, I had hoped at one stage I could do this professionally for a archive or a broadcaster or even for a small time CD company. But no... My work is obviously not good enough. so I suppose Ive wasted the last 10 or so years of my life, Ive enjoyed every minute of hearing new sounds on disc and restoring them, but at what cost..
Im now 36 and very unemployable, No qualifications to speak of and no trade.
I really don't know how long I can "hang on" to this shadow of a existence but I'll try,

I might have a look at some of the B-sides Ive never put up here before.
So stay tuned.

Still Sick!

Yep still sick, over the last month and a bit ive spent well over $2000 on various doctors and speclists regarding my left ear, got a recurring infection and its so bad I cant work (no jobs anyway so that dosent matter, not even temp ones) I keep really wierd hours due to the pain so if it aint fixed, i cant work. So after seeing 2 specialists (I like a 2nd opinion) and haviong a very comprehensive hearing test, I have exectional hearing btw! No one could find anything wrong. I knew it was a off and on again inner ear infection as i used to have em as a kid, no one would belive me so ive just spent 60 miserable, unpaid, no dole, days waiting.. just waiting for it to clear.
Well out of pure desperation to get back to any work (more crappy call center stuff no dought) so i could try and find more 78's and transcription discs to restore I went to one of those "medical Centre" doctors which cost nothing, which is why I went!

After a 2 min consult and a quick peek into my ear the doc had it sorted and now im on the mend at last. Its been pure hell let me tell you.

One of the bad things was I had to finish a contract at a call centure due to my illness (did 3 months and they wanted to extend me but i had to decline) and now no one wants to hire me (it seems, or there is just no work)

The next thing I want to do is Upgrade this site somehow, if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Ok im a bit late for Anzac Day bit here in part is my tribute and personal thanks to all the Anzacs from every conflict.

Here's a picture of my grandfather Ernest Gregg when he was in the 2/2 Inf, He was later in Z Special Unit. (which for the most part is still secret) A future post will be a special Disc he recorded in 1940 in the UK while he was stationed there, he lost his life in Timor while on a secret mission for Z Special. Partly the reason I developed this Transfering Skill, to hear is disc properly.

No label shots for this one. From memory it was on the Decca label. Anyone have any info?
Again from a 100 gigabyte Cache I have of 78 Transfers which for the most part i have no label scans, Again I'm no collector (can't afford to be unfortunately) and transfer other peoples discs. Or discs I find at the Dump and junk shops (a rarity these days)

Nice pressing overall some slight distortion here and there other than that hear it without all the soul destroying noise reduction that "modern" CD reslease3s present!

So what Happened to the blog over the last few months?
Well ive been quite busy with some employment in the sound industry! well ok a call centure!
Was only a Temp position for 3 months and now its over and Im back sort of, Due to the fact that when like myself you are a temp and you get sick you go to work, no matter how ill you are. because if you dont go to work you dont get paid. No sick days for temps Im afraid. So in i trudges each day untill the enviable happened and I got the flu. Ok you say so what!!
Well I get the full blown flu once every 3-5 years and was not expecting it. Not in the least, and it started effecting my ears and I couldn't hear properly for a couple of months, used to have a lot of problems with "glue ear" as a child but not in the last 20 odd years!. so now im getting much better Ill start eking out some more sounds! Good news is I had specialist look over my ears and apparently I have exceptional hearing!

As the Jobs in Brisbane are non existant at the Mo ill work on some more Tracks for here! Oh and sign up for the Dole.

Wow a fantastic album with a host of British "jazz" alumni Including Johnny Scott, Tubby Haynes, Terry Walsh, Frank Clarke and more! Ive included a photo of the back cover so you can read the notes. Nice!

Anyway its a really stellar album as far as TV Theme albums go,

Now this might sound strange but im a terrible "Writer" and reviewer. So if anyone has any thoughts about this album and indeed any of the posts sofar please let me know! Ill add em here with full credits, Ta

I originally Downloaded this album as a mp3 from a mono pressing. (of course this aint mono folks!)
Like a lot of the other blogs out there hosting a myriad of forgotten albums, the quality of the rip and restoration left a lot to be desired, poor transfer (ceramic cart with plastic tonearm by the sounds of most of em) poor restoration, you know when the piano takes on a "honky-tonk" sound that means a over the top use of Noise Reduction. Great "holes" due to overuse of automatic de-clickers. And worse of all crappy Pre-Amps!
"jumps" and after extensive "restoration" lots of noise left!

Now after hearing a few thousand (while out walking to keep fit last year) of these Blog type LP to mp3's the thought struck me to do the same. but try to preserve as much "musical" content of the disc, if not,
Don't rip and present it.
If the album is a bit "worn" or badly scratched, get another. not many people "get" that simple premise and the internet is filled with poor transfers masquerading as the "real thing". When it only costs a few $ to buy another copy on Ebay and you like it, Buy it!

And don't get me started on Plastic "turntables" which rip to mp3! Indeed...
As for 78's Thats another story, I rip what I get (not many) and haven't bought any from ebay due to the high cost of older discs. But would love to rip some more, Any Offers?
Some of my albums (LP's) Ive presented here cost me pennies, I mean the Bond album cost all of 25 cents.

Oh after a couple of years stuffing around with many forms of ilumination so i could get nice clean cover and label shots ( I tried in vain with flatbed scanners) Ive finaly found the "perfect" set up.
It may sound Primitive (remember this is a brownpaper and string operation!) but two "work lights" the kind painters use when painting houses, they are 500 watt jobs and after a couple of mins "placing them" create results like the shots in this post and the last one!

Geoff Love - Big Bond Move Themes

Stock Standard Bond tunes LP from Geoff Love, who at the time was releasing a slew of "themed" discs over at MFP (Music For Pleasure) Some of them not bad (and may get a airings here!)

Its very well recorded with a fresh bright sound which shows our yonger readers that cheap records didn't mean poor sound (a misconception ive heard a lot recently) Not bad arrangements apart from the titletrack.

A couple of "mis blown" trumpets now and again dampen the otherwise sterling performance.

The disc itself had the usual crackle for a "played a bit" disc. The restoration cleaned up all (bar one or two) minor clicks and sounds very very good. A little too good!!.. Could be my new LP Cart as well.
The best Shure cart M97xE is now used for LP's and its a world of difference. The cart is not to overly bright, has no discernible peaks and is very "listenable", compared to previous cart which became "grating" to my ears after an hour or so.

Brit TV themes from the early 60's!

Im a bit of a collector of 50's-70's British TV, And when i was a kid (5 yo) I found this disc amoungst the 45's my parents had and played it to death. Only recently have I located a "fresh copy" of this very disc.
The Aussie pressing was on W&G Records while the original UK Pressing was on the woolworths own label Embassy, Who more the most part recorded "covers" and issued them on cheap discs. A noble industry and Embassy produced some very fine re-recordings (if i was richer Id start collectiing are preseriving thise discs here!)
It was only after hearing a BBC Radio Documentry about "Embassy" that I tracked down this recording..
The dicsc used in the new BBC Doco was very very poorly restored/transferd. I wrote to the BBC about this and offered my services for free but got no reply. This after writting to several BBC Departments and the producers of the series (which still airs). after hearing another show on the 'Archive Hour"

Now the recording itself. I was very lucky to obtain Three copies of the disc and each had its own problems.
From the three pressings ive cobbeled together a complete set.
to preserve the ambience of the recordings ive not used that much noise reduction.. any more and it adversly efects the life of the recordings. There's a little distortion which was evident on all 3 pressings.

now onto the music

Zcars - A fine version of the theme, for years I thought it was the Johnny Keating Pye recording untill i obtained a disc that was audible! (my old 45 was beyond playback) Ive seen quite a few Zcars epps of late.

Dr Kildare - pretty much the same as the "telle" vesrion with all those Mantovani type strings.

Maigret - Ive heard a few of these recently and this one is by far the best. Ive only seen the one epp of this production anyone have any more?

Coronation Street - Although a "sopie" which i have no interest in for some reason I adore the theme. perhaps its the Northern bluesy jazzy feel of it but it just "fits". out of all the various versions of this theme Ive collected again this one takes the cake, partly due to the walking bass line and the harmonies of trumpet and clarinet.

Ill prsent some more rare Brit TV theme Discs soon. up next a 1963 disc by Steve Race, Tubby Haynes, Johnny Scott. "Dance To The TV Themes" Its taken a few years to find a clean Stereo Pressing!

Another Vdisc!

Like most of the 30 odd Vdiscs I have most are in a Pitfull state (the only reason i came by them) but underneath all the many many expolsive clicks and pops lies a fidelity not heard in any commecial disc of the time. Not only that but many of the VDisc "sides" were new recordings or at the very least taken from AFRS airchecks.

The Harry James side is the one I want to focus on here as it contains some rather bopish arrangements from Mr James. The other side although good shows what the makeup of a typical Disc was.

Now What was a Vdisc? for those not in the know, A VDisc was a 12 inch Vinyl 78 pressed with the usual Standard (wide) grooves that 78's have, They were made to be issued to the troops during ww2. They were sent the the many troop camps, ships, and anywere armed men would be. The discs diddet get into the hands of ordinay soldiers during the war but they would be sent to the Camp,Ship Etc and be used over the PA or in-house "radio" network. after the war all the discs were Recalled and destroyed, but some guys "lifted" discs and took em home. which is how they exist today!
The condition of this platter is appalling, many large scratches, a cascade of crakle and in some parts "holes" wher someone had dropped a heavy steel needle pickup into the grooves. As I said before Ive not found a "clen" vdisc yet, But one day I hope to transfer some "good" ones.

Are Vdiscs worth all the effort in locating and transfering?
Yes! we have to remember for the most part America had a recording ban on (from mid 42-44) so any music from that period is "rare" . Most of the Big Bands and recording outfits had got Bolder and . umm its hard to put into words but Swingier!

If you know of anyone with any VDiscs and would like to get em professionally transferred and restored let me know.. I just want to her the tracks!! Im not a collector, just a big band buff

Sorry about the absence of tracks for a while, Ive been busy with some work! yes work, real paid employment!.
Ok it was for a call centure but it was nice being able to "live" for a while rather than just to "exist"

Some nice sounds to come!

Ive found out that one of dead cameras (LCD Viewfinder dead) will output to a TV, which I can use a a primitive Viewfinder, as you would expect Taking "label" shots requires some fiddly settings and the right "light" set up. ! All I need now is some discs..

I did pick up some classical side's recently, some 80RPM one's too. Ill put the best of them here.

We've had this one before, but in the light of the sad news of the great man's passing here's one of my Fav tracks from Mr Paul.

I have quite a few of his 78's.. they are mostly on CD and sound superb so there's not much point of posting any more (is there?) Remember If you know of someone with a stack of 78's Tell me!! All I want to do is transfer them and present them here!, Im in no way a "Collector" all I want is to hear the music I love, not to ferret away dusty discs in a dark corner unloved.. that's the biggest crime to music, having all these great sounds hidden!. Hell I don't even have much of a collection! (can't afford any now sadly....) so If you know someone who wants some discs transferred for FREE, expertly too, just ask.

One of my favirote Bands would be Mr Millers Organisation, wether the civilian band or the AFF one, Ive enjoyed it all (apart from one or two Novelty numbers!)

So here's a Blast from the past. It some of the Early Pre 39-42 band. Yep those elusive columbia 78's.

By the look of these Pressings Columbia were still trying to "flog" their recordings while the "real" band were on RCA Victor Bluebird (Or HMV here and in the UK), Shades of the Beatles recordings with Tony Sheridan being re-relesed thought the early 60's to try to cash in on the EMI Fame.

Still 2 "solid" numbers, and this time No Reverb. Yes the Offical Columbia CD of this set has the faint traces of Reverb and Bugger all Top end. (lets kill the treble and the noise policy). Im not Profeccing these are the best copies in the world. no just a junky copy I found, but with more "soul" than heard in the last 60 years.

Sold American was the B Side. I havent restored it as of yet.. anyone want me to?

The Eddie Heywood Sextet was very popular in the mid-'40s, playing melodic and tightly arranged versions of swing standards. Heywood's father, Eddie Heywood, Sr., was a strong jazz pianist of the 1920s who often accompanied Butterbeans and Susie. He taught piano to his son, who played professionally when he was 14. Heywood Jr. performed with bands led by Wayman Carver (1932), Clarence Love (1934-1937), and, after moving to New York, Benny Carter (1939-1940). Heywood led his own group from that period on, backing Billie Holiday on a few occasions starting in 1941. In 1943, Eddie Heywood took several classic solos on a Coleman Hawkins quartet date (most notably "The Man I Love") and put together his first sextet, which also included Doc Cheatham and Vic Dickenson. Their 1944 version of "Begin the Beguine" became a hit, and three years of strong success followed. During 1947-1950, Heywood was stricken with a partial paralysis of his hands and could not play at all. He made a gradual comeback in the 1950s, mostly performing watered-down commercial music in addition to composing the standard "Canadian Sunset." Despite a second attack of paralysis in the late '60s, Eddie Heywood continued performing into the 1980s.

Thanks guys for some of the fine remarks about some of the posts so far, Half the reason I started to do this was to find out as much information i could about these 78's and what better way than presenting them here and letting "those in the know" help me out!
There are still hundreds of 78's Ive put up here that no one has left a comment on! so if you have a little info or just to add your thanks or abject horror please do.

Ok Ok, I know the name of the group is a bit un PC but bear with me,

When I was a wee lad a TV show called Doctor Who was one of my fav shows. now there was this "story" called Death To The Daleks (from 1974) that had as it's incidental music recorded with a "Saxophone Sexttete" and on the Dr Who story they used many audio effects on the "sexttete" recordings to give it a "out of this world" effect, and to good measure.

Now here is a recording of a real Sax Sexttete. and I like it very much, anyone know of any more recordings?

About 9 months ago before leaving the city of Newcatle for Brisbane I bought some "oldies" yep some pre 1940 78's, and why not. the material is quite good !! and its a change from the big band stuff, well for me it is!

heres an example. I bought 2- or so discs for about 1-3$AU each. all in very poor condition, If your a collector or have seen a 78 up close, these were all "pited" IE: bits of the surface are gone. like some one sanblasted each side!. whether this is age or just poor storage I just don't know.; But all I DO know is I like what I hear.

so remeber each side has had a considerbale "restoration" applied. and when played there was so much surface and noise I wasent quite sure if there were any musical content, and yep after tryng about 7 diffreant stili!
so its just a warning. if you want to hear music that NO ONE has hearfd for 80- years great! and thanks!. if you want cristal clear recordings umm well... try to find better copys and give me a bell!
and no "fake stero" copies. not much point!! not much "bandwidth!"

HELP!!! camera "died" anyone with any suggestions on a Replacement

Ok as you may or may not know both of my digital camera's "died" within a week of each other (spooky or what)
I had a 5mp (which i only used at 3mp as 5mp was too compressed, can you say Oil Painting?) Kodak and a 5mp Sony. weird how they both went, and yes ive pulled em apart and check with a meter every component i can safely check. and apparently for both cameras its a common fault and the only solution is wel... the bin!!

so my post is this.. Im looking to replace the camera just to take photos of 78 and LP labels,covers. has anyone used one thats "ok" that can zoom in on a label and not "bugger up" a red and gold HMV?

I know this post may sound like ive good mad, but I may have found a second hand store in brisbane with 78's. and Ive just bought 2, at 80rpm and from the BBC. and would LOVE to post em here if i could "get" label "shots"

is there another way to do this, Ive tried in the past a Flat bed scanner (which i now dont have) but after snapping a "junky 4th copy" in half while tring to "flatten" the label so it would scan. I trhink flatbed scanners are Off Topic..

anyone with ant suggestions.? Ive got a few 78's ready to roll but need help!

so I think they are very,very important. Because, Just think some young fellow is getting into jazz/swing whatever and hears say charlie Parker or some such blowing his natural top on "Blue Skies" He might be amazed or think its kinda twee. But remember He's never heard a "straight" version of the song... Ever.. and is unlikely too as well. so How can he appreciate all the other versions of this song. quite simply he can't.. not without hearing it played "straight" and then hearing what his fav muso does to it. Get my drift?"

so that was my opinion last year and little has changed, apart from the fact I now Know that a little "soloing" was allowed, this after looking at the offical 4 part "charts" or Ork copy.

of course its apparently a "live" recording, and yes it doses sound like an OB unit was involved, anyone know any details?

but hey one of the greatest songs ever written. so there!!

A few years ago, while transferring a large collection of someone's 78's I found a disc that He did not want Transferred. Being the Swing fool I am Of course I decided that Id transfer iot while he wasent in the room! and boy was I impressed. Not only "Sunrise Serenade" a Frankie Carle classic but "Undecided" also a Fav with me, Now when I first heard them I haddent heard much of Glenn Grey apart from one other 78 so i thought his style his well .... his. then I posted one of the tracks on YouTube and an Italian collecor (there are LOTS of swing fans there folks!) Told me It was and I Quote
"Hello Mr Gregg Just by coincidence i found on "You Tube" your recording of "Undiceded" that you credited to Glen Grey (Name should be Glen Gray ) on Decca - matrix 64711. In my opinion is this an error, "Undecided" was recorded by John Kirby and his Onyx Club Boys and recorded 28 october 1938 on Decca 2216 (Matrix 64711)"

so there we go, My question is, Is It Glenn Grey? Or John Kirby? whoever it is can someone send me more 78's of these two to restore!!! Cause I Dig the style

I Present some 78's from Mr Graham Bell

Ive spent a few Years hunting around for a Complete set of Mr Bells early work to no avail, there were some "Swaggie" lps a few decades ago and Ive heards some Piss Poor "Remastered" 78 CD's
So in desperation Ive restored some well loved discs. Would have liked to use "better" copies, but hey, its free.
I transferred quite a few of these discs a few years ago, Ill just post a few here, Sorry about the Non Existent scan! like many of my transfers I did years ago, I forgot to take a "photo" of the label.

TS Disc - The Army Show - Epp 03

Here's a Aussie Curio, A program called "The Army Show" which is basicly a Propaganda program to recuit young men into the forces. Its got loads of music played by a "house band" which are mostly covers of top tunes around 50-57, and nope no rock and roll!

I think they were recorded around 56-58, I have no label photo's which is a pity as the date was scratched into the run off grove.

I have pretty much the entire run of these shows, but I'm missing a few like 1 and 2 !

The discs were 10 inch Microgroove Long players, and when I mean micro I mean micro, I think I used my "hardly ever used" 0.5 mill styli on these, as the 0.7 (standard Post 50's sises) and the 1.0 (mono LP) styli just played the worn "top" of the groove.

and of course with any of my "restorations", the discs that I took these from were not in the best condition and there are slight "distortions" present.

Anyone remember hearing these?

Some of my Fav Benny Goodman Sessions are the Sextet Session with Charlie Christan, and I wore out my copy of "Wholly Cats" and "Benny's Bugle" Pretty Damm quick.
after the war he formed a new sextet this time with the addition of Mel Powel on Ivories, Mel had just finished a stint with Glenn Millers Overseas AAF band.
Slam Stewart on Bass and Red Novaro on Vibes.
I Dont have any more info than that, and I have no Label Photo!!

It makes a nice contrast to the Quartet and Trio recordings.

TS DISC - Strike It Rich Epp 13 Part 2 ARC

The pic is a little out of focus, As i was only making the pics for refrance and now don't have acsess to the discs.

Its part 2 of a Aussie Radio Game show, the other side of the disc was blank!
The disc had been played with heavy pickups at one point and had some groove "whine" atributed to such a playback in the past.
So in all I took as much away as i could without affecting the performace too much!

Oh a word of warning, This show was made before PC was the rule. There many be words totally unacceptable today.

Hmm looking at the label Its the same mob that produces the bird call discs below.

Howdy all you Milt-o-holicks out there here's a Full LP by Mr Herth

10 songs on this 10inch LP Its sounds fine too, An Ex radio station LP that had a fair bit of use in the mid 50's

Their work on LP is ok but it seems less "frenetic" and Swingy as their work on 78. Mabey it's just me

well you've come to the right place.
Some weird "bird call" discs.

Now the Label "Macquarie" I think it may be the same Label that ive seen on some Radio TS discs, IE the Aussie Macquarie Radio Network. anyone shed some light on this Label?

My Mother bought these discs from somewhere a while ago, Most of the discs were in appalling condition and had great chunks of shellac missing from some of them and of course scratched and worn.

I was at a "record shop" in Newcastle late last year and they had one of the "missing Discs" I don't have, they wanted 50$ AU for it!! these cost a few cents each!

Hi, You asked for some info on the Macquarie record label.

This was owned by radio 2GB and used to put out excerpts from their shows.

2GB had two production companies which produced plays on Macquarie and Artransa.

The 78s were used to send out these excerpts. I think they shut them down during the sixties, when I worked for 2GB as a production operator.

2GBs slogan was THIS IS THE MACQUARIE BROADCASTING SERVICE. The programs recorded by them in THE MACQUARIE AUDITORIOM (Jack Davey, Bob Dyer all programs with an Audience) went out to stations on MACQUARIE 16 inch discs. They ran for 15 mns per side, and were played with a 78 stlyus.

As for Artransa, American grace gibson came out from America to set up a Transcription service for 2GB. She left around 1941 to set up her own production company. She called the company Artransa which stands for American Radio Transcriptions For Australia and New Zealand. They used 16inch discs, and were plays and serials.

Both labels issued material taken from 2GB shows that people had made enquireys about. They were sold through regular record shops.Wilbur Kentwall who played piano/organ on Jack Davey shows made a few artransa discs.

I first heard this take on a newish Cd a few years ago, it was flat and lifeless with all the "music" crushed from the waxing to make it more "commercial" to modern ears. So i was pleasantly surprised to hear this 78.

Ok there is a fair bit of surface on my pressing Id say someone like myself a few generations ago like the arrangement as well. But unlike the CD version this one's got soul!

The music of Duke Ellington and the short lived keyboard the Novatone. are they mad? well, no.
I don't know how many are in his "Orchestra" but it fits. yep check it out for yourself , I know Ludwig looks rather unpleased on the label but I think he's worried about the condition of the disc!

Tiny Italian Record Player

Ok here's a Real treat, Ok not that much of a treat "musically" but a diversion none the less.
About 3 years ago and on merely a whim, I purchased this weird oddity.
Its a "Mini Record Player" The singles are small, damn small, and are all in Italian.

Its from 1969 I'm led to believe and it still works after some minor electronic work.
the singles are all recorded at 33 1/3 and the spindle diameter is the same as a "regular" LP.
So with my long transcription arm in place, and some minor cart modification, I used a standard 0.7mil Stily to transfer em, I tried smaller styli but Microgroove it was.

Most of the discs played back horribly, and I have about 5-8 discs.
So I picked a few that were musically interesting "well the best would not play all that well so here are

one or two have Fab "photo sleeves" while most don't. Ill load them here as there is no "zip" file that contains everything.

In fact this was the only battery radio I had when the Newcastle Floods came and we went underwater. I was awake for 2 days listing to the local ABC bdcasts on this! Its now in "bits" waiting repair. "bloody copper contacts broke" which "start the disc" yep those bloody copper "fingers" snapped while i had a lend of a HD camera to "film" the thing in operation for this blog, Bloody Tyipical. mutters off like Tony Hancock

I first Knew him from the Broadcasts of I'm Sorry I Havent A Clue, A very good british Pannel Game for Radio 2. among them some of the members of "Im Sorry I'll Read That Again" of which I have all the shows, and all Uncut too! (the bbc threw them out mid 70's ISIRTA)

Before I left NSW to Sunny Queensland I transfered some 500+ LP's, Mainly Out of copyright Lp's that I could post here.

Well somehow, and dont ask me how, Ive lost all the "Raw Dubs" I do have a small sampling of some restorations I did. And here's one. I'ts of no matter I lost the Transfers, as I still have the discs, although they are 1200 Kilometer's away!

Its A W&G Lp, (they rescored the Seekers First) and most defantly OOP!.

some Nice Dixiland, and some odd tunes too, the LP was a bit worn but as you hear it's sound great now.

It's a Zip file, Most computers will be able to handle this, If not get a free copy of WinZip.

Now before you exclaim But Ade a Big band fan isnt he?
Well yes of course but I like a HUGE range of music, Right up to the tuines of today, If I had my way I'd be presenting you with swing PLUS the albums which Ive restored that sound Much better the "ade way" Like say out of the hat, The Beatles, My beatles "rips" from vinal sound better than ANYTHING that's ever been, and yeas Ive hears ALL the rips around (DR Ebberts Et All). Why? its my bleeding Pre-Amp of course!
But the prob is I cant Up them here, Why? Ive had a BLOG before you see, A popular one, while it lasted.
And had 78's AND 50's to 80's LP/Single Re-Masters BUT EMI, BMG & SONY Did not "Like" my work.
Copyright you see, even if some of my stuff sounded better than theirs!! So It was "Deleted"
So I tread Very Very carefully these days and thats why you can only Glimpse my "Musical World"!!

I Don't really have to explain this 78 do I?

The reason im uploading this one it it's marginally better than any Official RCA Master.
There is Top end Ive never heard before on any CD, Lp, Cassette, 8track, Open Reel of this ever!
and Put those headphones on and hear my "Fake Stereo' version!!

But it comes at a price its a little distorted and its very "compressed to the point of distortion"
Ive had about 8 or so "In The Mood" 78's and this was the only one I bothered to transfer,
You see its not my favorite Miller piece at all!. Its probably its popularity that's turned me off the piece, I mean its not such a bad Riff type song, and I like "Lesser" riff based swing numbers!

Here's another by the Forgotton bandleader Larrt Clinton
the old tune "Down Home Rag" must have been pretty popular at the time as a few bandleaders recorded it one after another or it was cheap on the copyright to record. Hence the "swinging the classics" that was abundant at the time (and around the ASAP ban)

But this version is quite good, In Fact better than Tommy Doresys who's version outsold this one.

Again 3 different restorations for your Perusal.

The Label photo is not the best, and I don't have it anymore so its the best I can come up with !

Helooo Folks,
As It takes several hours to upload ANYTHING on dial up Ive been kind of "curtailed" in what I Upload, But fear not I hope to get it sorted soon, I hope!

while finishing off a major VHS restoration project on a pile of Monty Python films and TV work that's never been released (Industrial films, Gilliam Animations, Early TV stuff etc) I decided to go though some of my Big Band VHS tapes and see what I could bung up here. The first Offering is from a 1946 15min short!
Yep its Tex Beneke leading the Glenn Miller Orch with In the Mood, Not my favrioute tune but its interesting to see none the less. and check out the strings!!

Pretty soon Ill upload the full version here as a Divx File which looks supurb concidering the tape's they came from. (and I made "fake stereo" versions wich sound pretty nice)
The sound was very crappy Optical film Soundtrack which has gone though a couple of Lo-Fi VHS dubs, I Took out as much "noise" as i could without affecting the "timbre" of the piece,
They came from a set (I wish I had em all) "Charley Video Presents - The Swingtime Collection"
There were loads of em and in the 90's I haunted 2$ shops and the like to pick up as many as i could, Most of the tapes came from a 1965 UK Tv show but there is a lot of real mcoy 40's films too.
Ild love to work on the original Films or atleast better copies but for now enjoy.
and next its a Miller Medely from the Tex beneke band, and they play Don't be that way AAF style!

My rapidshare acount nearly ran out (if it does all the stuff ive posted will be gone ahhhh!)

Wow its been a few weeks since I logged into my Paypal Account and It looks like ive had another Donation, Thanks Its going towards the "rapidshare" Premier Account as mine runs out in a few weeks!!

Here's Tex Beneke leading the Post Glenn Miller AAF band with an old AFF number (which for the moment Escapes me) Texas Tex on the HMV label

It's a great tune but played rather lacklustre compared with the "live" AAF versions available.
Nice to hear the guitar comping away though (try to find THAT on any CD version!)

Standard restoration applied, the disc was origianly found in a junk shop and had sevral layers of dust (in fact one side, this one was unreadble as the dust was rather "tar" laden) took a few mins soaking in ordanary household dishwashing liquid before the bulk of the tar incrusted grime could be scraped away!. so therfore the disc was a little on the "worn grove" side, It sound sounds rather good after carefull restoration.

Ok here's one of my "surprises" in Audio Restoration.
while working on transferring a pile of 78's i found this one. Ok Ok so what's "New" about this disc.
Ok its in STEREO. what! you may exclaim a 1933 British Parlophone 78 in stereo.
yes and... no

what we have is the full backing, Minus Freddy's solo on side one, and on side two we have the whole arrangement. so whats new about that then you may ask?
well using some newly developed technology and a hour of "tinkering" I for the first time have "synched" this masterpiece in REAL STEREO.!! take a listen and by the way Ill give you ALL the sides too. you can "roll your own" mixes at will (who's will?)

The 78 was not in the best condition, It had been played literly to death by the time i transfered it. But with a little of my own brand of "magic" we can really apreciate what a great disc this really was.

I've only heard one other by Glenn Miller on a live Chesterfield Acetate.

From memory this was a HMV 78 (lost the details but kept the transfer!)
This one scrubbed up pretty well. I'd like some more of their 78rpm's!

Benny Goodman - Bach Goes To Town (Templeton) HMV OA030702

Here's one I "missed out" in uploading last year.
This track "ignited" my passion for some of the Obscure tracks of Benny Goodmans band.
I first heard it on a 3 "cassete" set from readers digest I bought second hand in the late 80's.
of course for many years I wanted to hear the 78 and by pure chance I found a worn copy and hey presto here it is.

what suprised me with this track compared to the versions issued on LP,Tape and CD. Is the Dynamic Range. this track on Re-Issues suffers from to much compression. IE compression makes the loud parts soft and the soft parts the same "level" as the loud bits. so when the band really "goes to town" it hasent the Impact when playing it from the original 78.
This Ive corrected! and what a number. the small combo section is really "tight" and keeps it Swining!, Thaks Mr Goodman.

The song itself, well it's one of Benny's attempts to "Swing the Classics" in the mid to late 30's most big bands were digging out the old "scores" and finding ways to swing em up. most are good. some are dreadfull. but this track really has that "Bach" feel!
in the 60's 3 French guys (Jacques Loussier Trio) swung up Bach's music. they released 4 (from memory) albums, I Really Dig the first one. If you are interested they are called "Play Bach"

BTW, The Fake Stereo Version is quite good (with headphones) and clearly "seperates" some of the instrements !

Ambrose, I have many 78's that I have transfered from this inovative british band leader. and this discs is about the worst (conditon wise) there were a multitude of "sins" with the transfer and the disc wouldent "track" part of it. hence the "jump" three quaters into it. But anyway I hope you enjoy the strange sounds (and yes I have a few more and they are in Better quality)

Well here's a Magazine ive had since the late 80's when I brought it at a Junk shop (on the prowl for 16mm TeleRecording no dougt)

As I dont need to state here, there are LOADS of missing TV shows (forget America, apart from the dumont network, pretty much they have Rich TV heritage)
But Us Aussies and our chums from England have had not much luck, For the past 25 years, well since I was 6-8 and read a book on my fav radio show at that time (hey, and still now)
The Goon Show Companion, It mentioned that there were loads of Goon shows missing from the archives. this shocked me as a lad and so did the 20th Anniversary Radio Times Dr Who special, which we got Down under ( I had 3 copies as I kept drawing Mows on the Dr's!) and It satated there were heaps opf missing Dr Who's. This has been a obsession with me in the past (no not a bad one) and Ive personally located 6, 4th series Goon shows for the BBC.
So my drift is there is a Helva lot of "missing Tv and Radio" even our Number 96 and the first seris of Rush (which we watched Via Umatic at school) are gone, but there may be a chance that someone recorded somthing anyrthing on these old tapes.
Im quite a fan of contiunity and Presentation.. you know the bits befor and after TV shows. well you can be sure that pretty much none exists anywhere. Like hearing old radio shows with the Add's intact seeing this old material gives us "yongsters" more of a picture of life back then.

If you have any of these please dont hesitate to email me and i can let you know if your tape could have a missing program on it.. and of course i could restore it for nix.

and I'm not mentioning the Recorders themselves.
I don't have a "player" myself but ive Re-jigged a few for collectors. mainly replacing caps and resistors and associated electronics. youd be amazed how this trick can make a pile of 30YO unplayable tapes play again!!

I have no idea whats on em. I restored most of my decks (for like minded collectors who have "passed on" ) so have no assess to a deck to play em back on ( and if you have an old one lying around I'd love to hear from you!)
But these are mostly Sony CV2000 and CV1250 and other makes .

did you know that some Epps of "Countdown" and even a few missing "Tommy Cooper" shows have been saved on the same type of tape as below!!

so yes in short I like old Archive TV! and strive to preserve some of it. I have 1000's old old UK shows that will never see the light of day, and you know what I love em, call me weird I don't care.
But that's not where it ends ive spent years looking though "junk shops" for said tapes and TR's.
What are TR's well it stands for TeleRecordings, its the process of recording a Video tape onto film for presivation and or sending to another country to show. Australia had a LOT of TR shows that are no longer in any archive, Ive come close to finding some but not recently. Did you know that Z-Cars is only represented by a handful of shows? it ran for 16 years!!

Oh BTW Im still working on bringing you the sounds of 78's and Transcription discs and "lounge type" albums, but seeing Im Moving to Queensland in a week im trying to transfer a pile of LP's/78rpm's and that's what the computer is doing 24/7!!

Now I'm not just a fan of music and restoring records, British comedy looms large for me.
When i was a kid we had this 45 , I thought it a hoot, But it wasn't until the late 80's that I SAW Warren Mitchel's "Alf" (In Sickness and In health), Since then Ive amonted an extreamly large collection of Vintage Britt TV and have seen all the existing 60's epps of "Till Death", Including Up the Polls, the rare 1970 special with Eric Sykes and Spike Milligan, which was recorded onto "home video" a sony CV open reel format in 1970.

but about this disc. Well what can I say, you have to hear it to belive it..

If ANYTHING from popular culture is kept for the generations to come . let it be this platter. It'll make the buggers think!!!

Very "Enoch Light" sounds from Mr Harnell.
My Parents had this record and played it when I was very young, when I got a bit older I trashed their copy and spent the best part of 20 years trying in vain to Replace it!!
About a year ago I found a copy "online" paid for it and only the other week It came in the post!!

I really love the way out arrangements of the tracks, and get that crazy "tuned" drums. way out!!

The copy I received in the mail was ok. it had several large scratches which i have fixed up (in fact you'd never know they were there!)
and lots of general "Crackle" but still it was in better Nick than Mine (looked like My copy had been used as a dinner plate)
I employed very little Noise Reduction (hardly any but enough to clean some "noise out") and some crackle removing.

There is some light crackle left but to remove this would "muddy up" the top end and hey, Its a million times better Now that it was!!

A "Podcast" of TS discs

What Have I been doing the last few weeks?. Well I'm trying to get Archives In Newcastle (or (anywhere) Interested in my copies of Transcription Discs which could be important "historically"

As any kind of work in Newcastle is pretty much Non-Existent (to an Audio Engineer and IT Professional) who Doesn't Drive a car. and has applied for more jobs that most people alive (always get's back to "do you own your own car") and due to the crazy "rent" that landlords charge here In Newcastle, I'm forced to move interstate to try to find a job. So Before I leave I'd like the City Of Newcastle to have these Discs that I have Saved from destruction a "home", Although they are not the original discs that I possess I do have Fine "Flat" transfers of the discs, and also have some "restored" versions I made myself.
So far the archive of abc (sydney) can only accept ABC bdcast material (a lot of the discs originated from 2K0) I have some interest with the Newcastle University and perhaps the Newcastle Museum.

I cobbled together a string of "bits" from these discs and made a "podcast" so that archives could hear bits of the discs. The discs were all in "dire" condition with some discs very "mint"!
All the bits in the "podcast" are my "good" restorations.

I was hoping that handing back these discs to some kind of "archive" could get a little bit of publicity which would surly help me obtain work. but this hasn't been the case.
as Ive seen over the years by reading the local newspapers whenever someone finds something remotely Old and hand's it to some museum some "hoopla" always surrounds the event. but when a chance of historical RECORDINGS, not just a few faded photos or a old anchor or some piece of antique furniture. this is Oral History that YOU Can emersce yourself in. but stone me no one cares. oh well that's why's there's so much Missing TV and Radio.

There's all kind's of rare material here. openings of various important buildings, Local Radio shows, an OB when the Queen visited Newcastle (presenters calling the "action" from various Rooftops), including her speeches. etc etc..

Its a direct download Mp3. just a very quick "assembly" to around 10 mins to record. so expect dodgey production values and me repeating stuff I've said. It was just so "people in the know" could hear.

Phew!! Neraly time for some more cool discs!

Been very busy laying down that wax.

in the last 2 weeks Ive transferred two full "milk crate" boxes of 78's
As I just play em into the system (checking the stylus each side) and have a whopping but Wav file ready to "cut and paste' into individual Numbers (I have a 2 foot pile of 78's still not "named" yet!!)

There's lots of common type stuff almost all recordings by Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey etc etc and many mutipules of each, Im disregarding what sounds better.. Its best just to transfer the Lot. found a few more "Joe Dainiels" which sounded quite cool. and loads of "other" stuff

A couple that "jummped out recently are:

Ken Griffin "at the organ"
Ziggy Elman
Johnny Hodges
Will Bradley (with Ray MCkinnley)
The 6 Alarm Six
Jimmy Dorsey's "original" Dixieland band

Plus some wierd Italian Mini 45's which are very very small (and I have the player too!) but they do play on my turntable (just)
and some cool tracks from some Seeburg 16RPM (on hold discs) fom the 60's. some nice Art Van Damme tracks on those!

and i could go on for hours..

its a series of discs I'm transferring "when i can" they are not "rilled" so it takes time on each of em to "track" each "track"

Ive also been listening to a early 80's "history of pop radio" narrated By Noel Edmunds
which had a really interesting AFRS disc of Glenn millers AEF band. they just played Edwood G Robbinson Introing Glenn miller and it went into a string of pearls. and that version was very nice, they only played a breif bit but the Mic's were all set wrong and you could hear thej Rythm section clearer than before and Mel Powell was playing Piano riffs Like I aint heard before!!

Does anyone have a "clean" copy of this?

apart from that Ive been trying to "restore" a "grey market" Lp of Glenn Miller's AEF band in the UK with none other than Bing Crosby as Vocalist. They added a bit of reverb and killed all top end in an effort to "reduce noise" but it's still very nice to hear

Ok Im getting a lot of emails about

"how do I do this?"
"Can you sell me your preamp and or software?"
"Can I buy all your gear and have Exclusive rights for It?"

(just in, Ive been offered 100$US to "hand over" everything to a CD Company in the US who specialize in Remastering 78's. They give me 100$ , I refrain from using my own technology for good. Eh? how insane)

After saying "no thanks" its been a recerch project and a passion of mine that isnt finished yet!
I get very angry and quite rude reply's.
Which startle and confuse me. some are very very vicious and demand that I take all my content offline as they want to "steal my work" for their own gains. That is the most polite of em (over 40 emails and counting)

all from well meaning sorts that are just like me. People with a passion for restoring.
This I admire and respect. (the polite ones!) But, As Ive tried to state before and will again...

This whole restoring 78's and other mediums has been my passion for over 20 years,
It only all came "just right" after the purchase of some mighty fine stylus's
which were a gift!! I could never afford them, and unfortunately as they are wearing out which
is now the case I'll never afford to replace them.
after 20 years of reading (off and on) 1000's of electronics and audio magazine which
spanned back to 1939, I learned a great deal on the reproduction of the mediums.
as well as a first hand look at the technology at the time. I also have collected many
old player and promptly "pulled it to bit's" learning the "secrets"!.

Apparently when I was very very young. I never wanted toys, I wanted old electronics gear
to "play" with. I had old Transmitting gear, a Full desk with TT's from the late 40's, dozens of raidos tape decks all manner of stuf . I got my amateur Lincence when I was 12 (but never used it!!)
this gave me a incredible "start" to my learning on how the original discs were cut. This and reading of 1000's of mags which were very technical about the recording process.

This was the start!!..

I then started a radio show in the late 90's. and was playing big band swing type material.
I was totally disappointed at the quality of the sound from these "NEW REMASTERS" for the most part had come from "respected"
companies. I started hearing the same "dubs" on many a CD release. most were made by RCA in the late 50's!! this and the always annoying for me "reverb on mono releases" which I can't stand (although I know some people actually like this stuff)

I started to play with preamp designs and came up with a few idea's of my own.. Bought several different types, Pulled em to pieces and finally came up with my final design. Sparing nothing just the Highest of FI for my preamp.

Believe it or no,t a lot of my "restorations" I played "on air" between 2005-07. No one cared or noticed, It would take me hours and hours to prepare each show with discs that no one had heard for 60 years, while other presenters played crappy cd's of the more "popular" songs "in the mood" "sing sing sing" etc and got all the listers, respect and job offers so i got very dispondant with it all and for about a year "gave it up"
Applied for thousands of IT jobs, got a Degree in 99 and have stayed very currant, including building and designing Digital Cinemas For ******** ******.
I was the head IT guy there or i should say the ONLY IT guy there!! and helped install and design 100's of systems, In the end after they wouldn't pay me 30 hours overtime then i asked to be paid more than AU16$ an Hour for the IT, Electronic repairers (fixing all manner of gear) I did and the Metalwork every day This was not possible so I quit, Tried to get the dole to hold me over but was denied this as i had quit my job. had to live on handouts etc.
so to say when i was rejected over 2769 times for jobs Aplications in a 12 month period was pretty bad. when I had done SO MUCH it work in a 3 year period than most IT professionals today.

So last year I got "back on-track" I had no turntable, couldn't in a million years afford one so bought one on ebay that was broken "beyond repair" I got this for nothing and quickly had fixed the hundred or so "broken Tracks" on the circit board (most needing nearly microscope work)
Fixed it fine!! (ok it still needs work every week or so) but it is a direct drive model with variable speed. just what i need.

found I had a few boxes of 78's I had won at an auction about 10 years ago. so started to transfers what I new would be "different", being involved in a few Radio stations I kinda know what's available and whats not (or at least whats on poor sounding "Grey" market cd's).
Then it struck me after hearing some new cd's of transfers, that my "transfers" might be sort of unique. and believe me that's been the aim for the last 5 years of a hard very hard slog.

My whole aim in this field is to firstly obtain a job in this kind of work, or at least a job in archives (which has been my dream for as long as i can remember I'll even work as a cleaner in an archive!)

so to "give away" my years of rescherch overnight is kind of insulting to me as i can only hope you can appreciate and respect.
all I want is to be able to work for someone who can appreciate my work and a paid job!! not much to ask is it!!

so to the 30 or so people who email me (more coming each day!). I'm very sorry, this merge "skill" of mine is not to be given away, I can not provide schematics or Software Packages of my "rig". It's not just the tools you need to do this but a very good "ear" and the experience and the knowledge of 60 years of recording techniques that you could never learn from "the Net" .

would you ask a painter for his palette and brushes and expect to paint like him... think about it..

But rest assured I still love hearing your comments about my "restorations". It can be quite irritating after posting 10 or more 78's to find no one has commented on any of em!! this can "slow" my work down considerably. But as you are here because you LIKE my work , have it

I know all this is is a Hobby, at it remains for me, as it always amazes me when I hear a disc Ive not transferred before. The thrill of a band playing a familiar song with a different arrangement still gives me a kick! and to be honest My preferred "take" on these discs are the RAW dubs. these are the ones I listen too!! like some, I have my Own De-clicker built in my head!!

I transferred some 40 78's today (moving interstate to find work. and don't want to lug em there)
some nice material like Joe Daniels (some i had "put off" as they are badly Scrashed)
most of em at the bottom of my "pile" but hey most were a revelation!!
